What Is Feet Per Second (FPS)?
FPS measures the speed of the BB as it exits the gun barrel. It tells you how fast the projectile travels through the air.
Definition: FPS is the number of feet a BB travels in one second.
Common use: Most airsoft players and fields use FPS because it’s easy to measure with cheaper chronographs.
Typical values: Airsoft guns usually shoot between 300 and 600 FPS, depending on the gun type and field rules. using .2 gram BBs
Why FPS Alone Can Be Misleading
FPS only measures speed, not energy. A BB’s energy depends on both its speed and mass. Two guns shooting at the same FPS but with different BB weights will have different power levels.
For example:
A 0.20-gram BB at 400 FPS has less energy than a 0.30-gram BB at 400 FPS.
Heavier BBs carry more kinetic energy even at the same speed.
This means FPS alone doesn’t fully describe the gun’s power or impact.
What Is a Joule?
A joule (J) is a unit of energy in the metric system. In airsoft, it measures the kinetic energy of the BB as it leaves the barrel.
Definition: One joule equals the energy transferred when a force of one newton moves an object one meter.
In airsoft: It represents the energy of the BB based on its mass and velocity.
Formula:
J = (FPS / 3.2808399)² × 0.5 m / 1000
Since BB mass is usually in grams and velocity in FPS, conversions are needed to calculate joules.
Why Joules Matter
Joules give a more accurate picture of the BB’s impact power because they account for both speed and weight. This helps:
Compare guns shooting different BB weights.
Understand the true force behind a shot.

How to Convert FPS to Joules
To convert FPS and BB weight to joules, follow these steps:
Joules (J) = 0.5 × mass (kg) × velocity² (m/s)²
Where:
Mass is the mass of the BB in kilograms.
Velocity is the velocity of the BB in meters per second or feet per secound
1 metre per second = 3.048 Feet per second
For example, if you have a BB weighing 0.20 g and firing at 328 m/s, the calculation would be:
Joules = 0.5 × 0.20 kg × (328 m/s)² = 10,752.8 Joules
Example Calculation
A gun shoots a 0.20-gram BB at 400 FPS:
Mass = 0.20 / 1000 = 0.0002 kg
Velocity = 400 × 0.3048 = 121.92 m/s
Energy = 0.5 × 0.0002 × (121.92)^2 ≈ 1.49 joules
This means the BB carries about 1.49 joules of energy on impact.

FPS is easy to measure with a chronograph and is widely used in airsoft communities. Some chronograph ask for bb weight and will work out the Joules for you. AHB uses Joules as our standard.

If you use heavier BBs, your FPS limit might need to be lower to stay under the joule limit.
